When I think back to how Hungry Penang Lang began, it still amazes me that it all started with just one Instagram post. There wasn’t a business plan, no roadmap, and certainly no idea that it would grow into what it is today. It was simply me, a Penang Lang, wanting to capture something I loved—food—and sharing it with the world.
Why “Hungry Penang Lang”?
The name itself often sparks curiosity. Many people assume it’s all about Penang food. But actually, “Penang” here doesn’t just mean the island’s famous hawker fare. It’s about the perspective.
In Hokkien, Penang Lang means “Penangite.” And that’s what I am—a Penang Lang hungry for good food, wherever it may be found. Whether it’s a humble bowl of noodles in George Town, a café in Kuala Lumpur, or even a discovery overseas, I carry the Penang Lang’s tastebuds and lens with me: curious, appreciative, and always ready to eat.
That’s why Hungry Penang Lang isn’t just about Penang—it’s about being a Penangite who’s hungry for stories, flavours, and experiences, both near and far.
From Curiosity to Community
At the start, Instagram was just my playground. I wanted to learn photography and videography, and food became the perfect subject. Each post was a way of experimenting—with angles, captions, and storytelling.
But something unexpected happened. People started to respond. They asked me for food recommendations, shared their own memories, and followed along as I explored one eatery after another. What began as a personal diary slowly grew into a community.
I realized then that this was more than just posting food photos. It was about telling stories—of hawkers who’ve been at the wok for decades, of recipes passed down through generations, and of new cafés finding their place in the food scene.

Now, with Hungry.my, the journey continues. This space allows me to go deeper: to share guides, stories, and experiences in a way that’s lasting and searchable. It’s still rooted in the same passion as day one, but now it’s about reaching more people who are hungry for food stories.
